Before the patterns

Data structures

Every coding pattern is built from a handful of structures: arrays, hash maps, stacks, queues, heaps, trees and graphs. Learn each one once, here, and the patterns become recipes you already have the ingredients for.

1. Why structures first

One structure is used by many patterns. A hash map appears in Two Sum, sliding windows, prefix sums and grouping; a queue drives every breadth-first search. Meeting each structure half-explained inside each pattern is confusing, so the beginner path teaches all twelve first, in order, then starts the patterns with 21 · Array & String Basics.

Already comfortable?Skim the operations table on each page (section 3) and the quiz (section 9). If both are easy, move on.

2. The twelve lessons

3. How each lesson works

  1. What it is, with an everyday picture, and how it sits in memory, animated.
  2. Operations and their costs, and the same code in Python, TypeScript and Java.
  3. Core operations, step by step: code players you can step through. Press Play and a voice explains each step as the code runs.
  4. Problems solved with it: easy LeetCode problems traced the same way, plus links to more practice on the pattern pages.
  5. A memory hook, common mistakes and a quiz to make it stick.

4. Where to start

New to coding interviews? Read Start here first (Big-O and recursion), then begin with 01 · Arrays and lists.
